Salinity (ความเค็มของน้ำ) คือค่าความเข้มข้นของเกลือที่ละลายที่ละลายในน้ำ ค่าความเค็มมักวัดในหน่วย part per thousand (ppt) หรือ % โดยทั่วไปจะสามารถแบ่งระดับความเค็มตามค่าความเค็มดังนี้

น้ำจืด จะมีความเค็มที่วัดได้อยู่ในช่วง 0 – 0.5 ppt
น้ำกร่อย จะมีความเค็มที่วัดได้อยู่ในช่วง 0.5 – 30 ppt
น้ำเค็ม จะมีความเค็มสูงกว่า 30 ppt

1 ppt = 1,000 ppm = 1,000 mg/L = 0.1 %
