Infrared Thermometer

What is Infrared Thermometer?

Infrared thermometer is a non-contact infrared (IR) thermometer. Sometime called laser thermometers (laser is to used to only help aim the thermometer) It can measure temperature from a distance. It measure surface temperature of targeted material. Even you aim the liquid in the cup, Infrared thermometer can measure only surface temperature of liquid, not core temperature.

How to choose a right Infrared Thermometer?

Here are some importantt information when choosing a Infrared Thermometer.

1. Measurement Range (of course)

Whether high temp or low temp, you need to make sure your intended temperature range.

2. Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S)

Many times, we have been asked the question "how far can it measure?" D:S ratio can answer this question. D = Distance from instrument to targeted object, S = Spot dia. meter of measured area. Learn more about D:S ratio of Infrared thermometer.

3. Ambient Temperature of where you uses Infrared Thermometer

Ambient tempearture has an impact on measurement accuracy of Infrared Thermometer. Usually low-cost Infrared sensor has No Ambient Temperature Compensation (ATC), so it will work accurately only when Ambient Temperature is in normal range like 23 to 30 degree C. However, if you need to use it in cold sotrage room or near high temperature oven, ambient temperature will have strong effect on measurement accuracy. Please choose the model which has a good ambient temperature compensation function if you are working in special ambient temperature. See Infrared Thermometers with Ambient Temperature Compensation (ATC).

4. Emissivity

Emissivity is the measure of an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Emitted energy indicates the temperature of the object. But rate of emitted energy per temperature depends on the kind of material. Please see here for emissivity values for various materials.

5. Consider upgrading to Thermal Image Camera.

Nowadays thermal Image camera is also afforaable. You may upgrade your experience by using Thermal Image Camera.

See Thermal Image Camera Category.
